Our Mission

LEAP is charged with providing innovative literacy, school improvement, and youth development programming to expand educational opportunities and strengthen developing communities.

To create a world where all children and their families have access to higher education to reach their full potential and become agents of change for their communities.

A Call To Action

The Literacy Empowerment Action Project (LEAP) was co-founded in 2012 by award-winning authors Kwame Alexander and Tracy Chiles McGhee. Inspired after visiting Konko Village located in the eastern region of Ghana with a team of writers and professionals, LEAP was launched with an ambitious, multi-phase literacy, school improvement and youth empowerment agenda set in conjunction with Queen Mother Nana Botwe Adobea II of Konko Village (Juanita Britton). Our current focus remains on our LEAP for Ghana, in the Village of Timber Nwanta, KONGO Village Community.

It was in Ghana where LEAP was born. Our current focus remains on the eastern region of Ghana, but we plan to expand our reach as we grow.

BECOME AN AMBASSADOR

A Glimpse Of Our Impact…

  • Opened 3,000 sq foot Library, dedicated to Barbara E. Alexander;
  • Awarded a full-tuition and board scholarship for one young girl from Konko to attend high school, beginning September 2012;
  • Hosted the inaugural Camp LEAP program for 120 children in Konko village;
  • Developed the Nikki Giovanni Scholarship Fund;
  • Launched school improvement project by working with the men and boys in Konko to build bookshelves and create the first library for the school fully stocked with books ranging in reading level from kindergarten to upper middle school.
  • Provided funding for the purchase of materials to make bricks, to be used to complete work on the open air classrooms (ceilings, walls, etc.);
  • Hosted a Career Symposium at Ashesi University;
  • Held a symposium and discussion celebrating the life of Maya Angelou at the U.S. Embassy with American and Ghanaian literacy activist and writers; and
  • Co-hosted a Teacher’s Conference for over 300 Ghanaian teachers and administrators in Accra.
